Take out John Barnes (best English player of his generation and legend), Peter Beardsley (next best English player of his generation and legend), Stevie Nicol (Scottish and legend) and Steve McMahon (legend and harmless) and I'll go along with that. Great call on Phil Neal and Sammy Lee - I hate both of them For some reason I always end up in disagreement with Eamo: - Steve Nicol refused to wear an Ireland scarf in a photo at Kenilworth Road. He was posing for a photo with me and my brothers and I had an Ireland scarf on and he said "I'm not standing in the same photo as someone wearing that." My dad said "fair enough so" and didn't take the photo. Nicol tried to explain it away in the aftermath by saying he thought it was a Celtic scarf but that wouldn't have mattered anyway. Proper arsehole. - Barnes I would include for the reason that he had the gall to imply on a BBC documentary that he was sacked from Celtic for race reasons. He says that it wasn't racist but it was because of the "dynamics of when a black manager is at a club." Transcript of programme from BBC website: BARNES: Kenny Dalglish was taken as technical director and he insisted on me coming. He trusted me, he knew me, we'd worked together before so he had belief in me. And although we won 12 of the first 13 or 14 matches, I realised very early on that you know if I lost a couple of matches, because everyone there wasn't fully behind, or wasn't, not necessarily supportive, they were supportive while I was there and they were behind me when I was there but they weren't all in favour of the appointment. So I knew that because they are not in favour of the appointment if I lose three or four of the matches that will just reinforce, yes, we've got the wrong man. KING: I think John Barnes' situation for me is what I call the one theory, black players are given one chance and that's it. I think John Barnes is a very interesting situation, here is a black player, that we've been told that he is probably the best role model we have had for 20 years, and if he makes it we can do it anywhere. The fact that he didn't make it at Celtic, maybe implicitly saying that black players are not ready at the moment. MARSHALL: John Barnes was sacked after only eight months and some poor results. You are not suggesting there was racism involved in Celtic's decision? BARNES: Not at all. In fact my Englishness seemed to be more of a problem than my blackness up there! But no, in no way was I accusing Celtic of racism but we are talking of the dynamics of when a black manager is at a club. In many respects it is unconscious. You know it's unconscious, you say to people, you tell people your ideas it is unconscious in terms of you can see do they actually believe what you are telling them. That is what I'm talking about. Not necessarily the Chairman, the directors, it's everybody concerned with the club. Ricky Hill was at Luton, as much as everyone loved Ricky as a player and may have loved me as a player, when you become a manager do they actually have the belief in what you are telling them? Interesting one re Steve Nicol. He deserves to be in for that. I take everything back. Barnes was a smashing footballer and one of the greatest players to pull on a Liverpool shirt. Dare I say it Rock - you dont know that what Barnes says wasn't true.

Can see this one getting ugly! Of all the things to accuse Celtic of I must admit I never expected racism to be one of them.

I can't allow that last comment to go unchecked. Both Nicol and Barnes were good players - Barnes was better than good but the point I am making is that it doesn't cloud my judgement of their actions. Nicol was a decent player and a cock. End of story - welcome to the list.
Barnes was an excellent player but what he said above was massively unwarranted. Racism is a serious issue and a serious problem in English (and Scottish) football. It serves no purpose however to dress up intolerance of incompetence as racism, however implied and disguised he wants to make that comment. Barnes was not up to the job and the biggest reason for people turning against him was probably Liam Brady. The fans learned their lesson at that time that they did not want someone serving their managerial apprenticeship at Celtic. Barnes was appointed in spite of this but he clearly wasn't up to it. In all his interviews he specified exactly what formation he would be playing and that he'd never change from it. Those are the actions of an inept manager.
I think it behoves all of us to exercise caution when throwing around allegations of intolerance or racism because it dilutes the real problem when it is used to mask other issues.

Barnes' 4-2-2-2 formation - never really caught on, did it?

Dare I say it Rock - you dont know that what Barnes says wasn't true. I know what you mean here Eamo, obviously Barnes was closer to events than we are, but the principle is always "innocent till proven guilty". If one is allowed make allegations such as these, without producing any supporting evidence, that principle falls. Disappointing that the interviewer didn't demand specific instances of racism, that might be possible to refute. Unsurprising though.

If one is allowed make allegations such as these, without producing any supporting evidence, that principle falls. quote] Spot on there Law. I just threw it out there. I know that Barnes was a rough manager. But as a Liverpool fan I cannot support his inclusion after all the wonderful moments that he gave me. It would be hypocritical

Are you sure they're all English, rather than Scottish, Welsh, from the 6 or indeed (since it goes back pre-1916) the 26 counties?

Was there two John Regis'? #s 1524 and 1525. I remember the little freak with no neck that used run in the relays with Christie and them in the early 1990s. Was always a Denise Lewis fan I must say. I see Jane Sixsmith on there - she's this ginger minger with short hair and Ken Dodd teeth that used play hockey for GB. It used to anger me as a child when she'd appear on A Question of Sport.
Looks like we've made it with over 2 weeks to spare. ;D
Shall we just keep going?

Are you sure they're all English, rather than Scottish, Welsh, from the 6 or indeed (since it goes back pre-1916) the 26 counties? Con Leahy (1959) was an Irishman sent to the 1906 Games by the IAAA and GAA, representing Ireland, but as Ireland did not have a National Olympic Committee at the time, would not have been allowed compete except that Britain included him in their team. Unless there was another John Boland (1952) other than the 1896 tennis gold medal winner, he was a native of Dublin, and was very proud of his Irish roots, going on to become a Nationalist MP for Kerry, and "an ardent proponent of Irish independence and the Irish language"; I understand his medal is now officially credited to Ireland, therefore his inclusion here seems rather harsh. Alister McCorquodale (1084) was as one might guess Scottish. As is Liz McColgan (1588). Mary Peters (1632) is perhaps Norn Iron's most famous athlete. And Colin Jackson (1195) is of course Welsh. Finally, Kris Akabusi (1571) has already been included. As has Audley Harrison (1123). And Chris Boardman (1187). (And his bike) And it seems unlikely that this is the first appearance of Matthew Pinsent and Steve Cram?

And it seems unlikely that this is the first appearance of Matthew Pinsent and Steve Cram? Having reviewed the list it seems this is the first appearance of Messrs. Pinsent & Cram. Apologies. But before we pop the champagne in celebration at reaching 1966, a number of double-entries remain: 220. Clive Woodward (previously 21) 484. Sebastian Coe (35) 485. Peter Stringfellow (86) 486. Ladettes (231) 550. Richard Littlejohn. (282) 606. Big Brother (79) 608. UK GAAP (262) 611. Manchester United (314) 614. The Spice Girls (276) 615. E4 (566) 729. Edward Heath (673) 733. Winston Churchill (115) 761. William Pitt, the Younger (107) 775. The Weakest Link (207) 790. Essex (97) And a couple of triple-entries: 493. Neville Chamberlain (279) 735. Neville Chamberlain (279) 752. Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington (423) 754. Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington (423) And before anyone points out that my number 1000 (the Millennium Dome) was previously mentioned, I've changed it to the following: 1000. The invasion of Ireland in 1171 by Henry II, supported by the English pope, and the subsequent breaches of the treaty signed then, kicking off 800 (well 745) yrs. of col. opp. On the plus-side, we appear to have two entries at 665?

833 Joe McQue 834 Malcolm McVean 835 Alex Raisbeck 836 Ted Doig 856 Berry Nieuwenhuys 935 Glenn Hysen Joe McQue, Malcolm McVean, Alex Raisbeck and Ted Doig were Scottish (Raisbeck & Doig were Scottish internationals), Berry Nieuwenhuys South African, and Glenn Hysen won 63 caps for Sweden. (I'm trying to get all this out of my system tonight so I can get some work done tomorrow)

Was there two John Regis'? #s 1524 and 1525. Similarly, A. Munro is at 1059 and 1943, Peter Radford at 1714 and 1925, and Richard Priestman at 1753 and 1926. Other entries included twice in this post are David Hemery, Jack E. London, Mary Rand, Simon Terry, Edwin Mills (I couldn't be bothered typing out the references).

95% sure we've had Bracken. I think we've had Austin Healey as well (maybe even twice - once as the player and once as the car).

1980. Gerrard's disgraceful dive last night. 1981. BBC's disgraceful acceptance of it. 1982. The hypocrisy of this considering they are still complaining about Maradona's 'Hand of God' in 1986.

1983. English pundits constantly getting on the backs of their players who don't play in the 'best league in the world' (trademark EPL). Witness the criticism of Beckham at half time when they wanted Lennon brought on for him - two assists for Beckham in the 2nd half. Then the savage criticism of Hargreaves at the end. I myself haven't seen him stand out in many high profile matches but he's won titles and I think a Europan Cup with Bayern. A failed international like Ian Wright should shut the fook up instead of calling him a terrible player on national television.

Can I suggest
1984: Ian Wright
or is he covered by the previous two? I think that twat deserves a special mention on the list.
We should be aiming to get to at least 2006 by the start of the world cup. No problem I suspect!
