I propose that we put all coorespodence surrounding this topic in here....
Just listening to Dion at the moment - A Phil Spector produced album called 'Born to be with You'. I have to admit that I am liking it.
Did you ever pick up 'Promenade' Rock? I have an idea where it is so I could burn for you if you want.
Just gave Users from Whipping Boy another blast there - man that is incredible stuff

Got 2 Two Gallants albums based on your recommendation. I'll send you the bill if I don't like them. Also, Submarine has been re-released so I picked that up too. Listened to Users on the way to work...great minds and all that.

Also, Submarine has been re-released so I picked that up too. Seriously?? Where did you buy it? I was in HMW and Tower yesterday and saw no sign of it. I picked up Bossanova by the Pixies on CD - previously had on old blank tape that older brother (now married) copied from a mate. It was due a puchase. Great album. For me the first side (back to the tape again) is one of the best sides of music I have heard. Second side begins well but fades out in quality. Also got John Cale's Fear album. I fooking love that guy....

Smashing news about Blake the elder alright - I was worried he'd get left on the shelf but he got it together and must be commended for that. Wonder if eamo will be making me a copy of Promenade or did I burn all my bridges in the Germany debates.

Actually he is married almost four years now and he and his wife have a little sprog - bless him. The main point of telling you this is to emphasise the age of the blank tape, but I must say that I am touched by the subsequent outpouring of goodwill. And yes you have burned your bridges Rock - fuck off... Bandage - have you made any new friends in your new job? Anyone ask you to lunch... or did you sit in the corner by yourself ?

I picked up Submarine yesterday in Tower. There was a quite attractive female in the queue in front of me - it seemed like she was buying James Blunt or some of those jokers. What a waste.
Anyway as regards the album, I hadnt heard it in about ten years. Ì dont remember many songs from it apart from the wonderful Bettyclear, which is unforgettable.
For the very brief listen I gave it, I was hugely impressed. Like Heartworm there is not a weak song on there. Smashing debut which left enough room to build on it with Heartworm. The problem was: where do they go after Heartworm? The eponymous album is a huge disappointment for me - ok they had problems with their record company. Im looking forward to a new album which I believe is in the pipeline...

Listening to Damo Dempsey's 'Colony' at lunchtime. Possibly the best and most emotive song I've ever heard. An Irish living legend singing about our history and why it still affects us every single day. Genius.
Colony I sing the song of the colony How many years and you're still not free And your mother cries and you ask god why Greed is the knife and the scars run deep How many races with much reason to weep And your children cry And you ask god why
Annie, she came from Dunlavin Town The TB came and killed her family all around Population booms Eleven in two rooms Katie she came from down Townsend street Ten in a bed and no shoes on their feet 1916 came They played the patriots game Freddy, he came from the Iveagh flats Tenement slums and infested with rats Sleeping on damp straw Trying not to break the law Thomas, he came from Kilmaine in Mayo Semi starvation was the only life you'd know In a two room shack Then jailed in Letterfrack
I look to the east, I look to the west To the north and the south, and I'm not too impressed Time after time After crime after crime They raped, robbed, pillaged, enslaved and murdered Jesus Christ was their god and they done it in his name So he could take the blame if it's not all a game With bible in one hand and a sword in the other They came to purify my land of my Gaelic Irish mothers And fathers, and sisters and brothers With our own ancient customs, laws, music, art Way of life and culture Tribal in structure We had a civilisation When they were still neanderthal nations We suffer with the Native American, the Indian in Asia Aboriginal Australia The African people with their history so deep And our children still weep and our lives are still cheap You came from Germany, from France, from England And from Spain From Belgium and from Portugal You all done much the same
You took what was not yours Went against your own bible You broke your own laws Just to out do the rival But did you ever apologize For the hundreds and millions of lives You destroyed and terrorised Or have you never realized Did you never feel shame For what was done in your country's name And find out who's to blame and why they were so inhumane And still they teach you in your school About those glorious days of rule And how it's your destiny to be Superior to me But if you've any kind of mind You'll see that all human kind Are the children of this earth And your hate for them will chew you up and spit you out
You'll never kill our will to be free, to be free You'll never kill our will to be free, to be free You'll never kill our will to be free, to be free Inside our minds we hold, hold the key

Maybe Eamo genuinely doesn't like his music or maybe it was a tape his brother never copied for him in the late 90s. I don't know and frankly I don't care either. Dempsey does not need to be defended in any company or in any forum - his music stands up under any scrutiny and I can't wait for his new live album on Friday week. It's taken from the 2 sold out nights in the Olympia last December - I hope to hear myself on it.

Resurrecting this. Just been listening to Dempsey's new live album - fook it's powerful stuff. It was always obvious that his incendiary live shows are what he does best despite the undoubted quality of his 3 studio albums. To hear the crowd singing back 'Colony' and 'It's All Good' made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Best Irish musician of his generation. Also listening to Sufjan Steven's Michigan and Illinois albums this morning. Best stuff I've heard since the Arcade Fire album 18 months ago. Listening to top tunes in the garden in the sun. Sweet.

I gave Submarine another listen there over the weekend. I love it I have to say. A musician mate of mine said that it ripped-off Sonic Youth but I dont agree. Sure it was influenced by them but there is definitely an individual stamp on it.
I am liking 'Astronaut Blues' on it
On the rip-off subject anyone ever hear 'All I Need is the Air that I Breathe' by the Hollies? This was blatantly plagiarised by Radiohead on Creep for me. This goes along with their other plagiarism - Weather with You (Crowded House) on Climbing up the Walls. They are still a great band though.

Heard an add for that Damo live CD on the radio this morning. As with all music adds it only plays a tiny snippet of the songs, sounds very very good and I will be making a purchase before the end of the week. Was never a big fan of his until I copied the shots album onto my creative about 2 weeks ago. It's top notch stuff. Very powerful songs. I had always thought he was overhyped by the Dublin media just cos he was one of their own. I have to admit I was wrong.

I brought 5 people to the show last December where the live album was recorded. Most, if not all, were Damo sceptics and all left the show in a state of awe. The man's untouchable. From reading his site today there was a 15 minute sing along on Dame Street of 'It's All Good' after the gig on Sunday. People were coming up asking what the fook was going on, others were joining in - he inspires this in his live shows. Raging I had pencilled in last weekend to go to Wexico now.

There's a huge element of begrudgery and sneering reaction when people hear his accent and he gets dismissed out of hand as some sort of cabaret act. The lad is superb however and is consistently awesome live.

To clarify I meant the amount of people who dismiss him until they actually take the time to hear him is huge. Agree with therock re the begrudgery and snobbery though. Can't believe he's not gone world wide yet especially after the plugging Morrissey and the likes were giving him.

At least you had an excuse - I simply forgot. I went on his website last week and saw from the message board that he was playing around the country this week. I thought to myself "that's odd when his Olympia gig can only be about a month away." Then I checked the dates and remembered it was June and sold out. To make matters worse a TG4 celebrity of my acquaintance was given two tickets on Saturday and gave them away cause he was down the country and he thought he remembered me having 2 already.

I have questioned the musical ability of Mr Dempsey in the past. That was wrong of me. I confess not to have heard many of his songs. As well as that he seems to have made an impact on members of the forum with a generally sound musical taste. And if Morrissey plugged him.........
