Getting back to this again:
For a long time Eamo has suggested that we're all mere Rock syncopants - I would beg to differ but it's a game of opinions. Let me say I don't think Germany will win it primarily because I believe their back four isn't strong enough but it would be folly to suggest outright that they've no chance of winning it.
If you look back at recent tournaments home advantage has been exactly that; an advantage. In 1996 England had patchy form, Shearer was on an international scoring drought and then they get to within a kick of the ball of the final with Shearer scoring about 5 goals if memory serves me correctly.
Similarly, Aime Jacquet was under serious pressure prior to France '98 as France's friendly results had been very disappointing also. A couple of early wins build up momentum, confidence rises and with the whole nation behind them they become very hard to stop.
Again, the Dutch in Euro 2000 beaten in a semi final shoot out . South Korea having a sensational WC by their standards and a Portuguese side that many had suggested was past their prime with the likes of Figo and Rui Costa now in their 30s got to the final of Euro 2004.
Added to this the fact that the Germans have a straight forward looking group tp get them going and you'd have to give them a reasonable chance of being among the contenders come the final week.
I'm not sure why I went for Spain. As far as I know they still have that ancient coach, Aragones, who seems to be out of touch with everything. They also have a poor record and with differing factions within the team such as the Basques, Catalans and Madrid boys I don't think they'll do it.
I'm going to go for Argentina now. A bit of attacking flair with Messi and Riquelme, Crespo to sniff out the goals along with Tevez for back up. Zanetti, Cambassio, Sorin, and a few hatchet men at the back. I think they'll be tough to beat and they're due a win at this stage too!

Klose and Gemany is 100/1 with Ladbrokes. Now that's value! I have a piece of that, I also have my fiver with Blake at 50/1 and I have Podolski and Germany also at 100/1. Finally I took Crespo and Argentina at 40/1.
Still will be taking 8/1 Germany to win and 28/1 Klose to top-score as separates.

From football365.com:
Jamie Carragher looks set to face Hungary tonight as a holding midfielder, with Liverpool teammate Steven Gerrard pushed forward in support of Michael Owen.
Sven-Goran Eriksson has pledged to play the team that will start against Paraguay in the opening game of the World Cup when England face the Hungarians at Old Trafford, and it now seems that Carragher is part of his first-choice line-up.
Carragher has been preferred to both Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves as the deep-lying midfielder, with Eriksson opting for a no-nonsense player rather than the more cultured Carrick.
The Swede's lack of fit strikers means that only Owen and Peter Crouch are experienced front men, and Crouch is quite rightly seen as a better option for the bench.
That leaves Gerrard as the obvious choice to play in a role he has often occupied for Liverpool, with Carragher taking his berth in midfield.

Having carefully considered matters I took the Poldi and Klose bets even though I'm still taking Argentina to win it. Basically think Germany have an easier group and should score more goals overall. Also expect a lot of goals from midfield from Argentina. This may seem odd but I've been thinking over the last few days of having a punt on England not getting out of their group. Sven leaving after the tournament, the circus around Rooney, Owen's lack of fitness (another injury scare last night) and the fact that he doesn't seem to know what formation to play now are the factors I'm taking into consideration. Just need Paraguay to suprise them first up - a point would do - then they should take T&T but Sweden could turn them over to knock them out. That's the theory anyway but forgot to ask for a price for it.

They'll definitely get out of the group I'd say. They'll have way too much class for Paraguay and T&T. think they've Poland after that which again shouldn't be a problem. Argentina in the quarters may be where the dream ends for them though. Doubt they'll need to use the plans they've apparantly made for a victory parade through London on July 11th.
Just in case anyone cares what I think my money is on Germany.

Is there tax on bets with paddypower.com and if so what rate? Am trying to set up a very delicately balanced bet, involving betting on a couple of countries and covering myself on other key contenders, but tax rates could sabotage me.

what about Ian Wright's comment last night regarding Gerrard's blatant dive for the penalty. "It's going to be done to us in the World Cup, so we might aswell do it....that's good play......" fooking disgrace. Can you imagine the nationwide whinging if another team had done that.....i hope the cnuts get screwed more than they ever got screwed before

Ian Wright should never be allowed near a pundits seat let alone be one. "I don't care... It was good play" Fook right off

Can you imagine the nationwide whinging if another team had done that.....i hope the cnuts get screwed more than they ever got screwed before Then even though that two foot tackling, no fringed fook blatantly cheated they were saying 'the defender got what he deserved - it was a silly lunge - even though was no contact we deserved the penalty'. Even Hansen agreed. Why does he always ride England? Alan, you were Scottish last time I checked. Picture the scene: World Cup final, England 1-1 Brazil, Kaka to Adriano, Ferdinand's sold himself here, it's a 3 on 2, Adriano to Ronaldo, Ronaldinho's on the outside, played into his path, last ditch lunging tackle to prevent the strike on goal by a desperate John Terry, there doesn't appear to be contact, the Brazilian's gone down though - oh no, it's a penalty, England lose 2-1. Back in the studio I can't imagine Ian Wright saying 'I don't care what anyone says that's good play by Ronaldinho and Terry got what he deserved'. Hypocritical, jingoistic idiots the lot of them.

Agree completly bandage. That was the exact point I was making to my housemates as we watched the game last night. If that was to happen to England in the world cup they'd be going absolutely mental.
Point of note though: according to my excel chart England and Brazil will meet in the semi final. Provided they both top their groups which I think is safe to assume they will.

Actually had a text composed to Eamo and Bandage last night asking what the fook Wright and Hansen were on about but decided not to send it for fear of being abused for watching an England friendly. Was disgusted by Gerrard's dive (his 2nd of the night) and the shitty justification for it by the aforementioned twats. Half-tempted to write a letter to Stevie G asking him to cut it out but probably too lazy.

Dead right Bandage. Exhalt for that one. I can't believe the BBC let a twat like Ian Wright in the studio. He's like an arrogant father watching an under-12 game of soccer in a rough neighbourhood. England will win the world cup the day you get some non-partisan commentary out of that muppet! Roll on RTE and their fine world cup analysis (Brady excluded!).
As an aside what do people make of Lineker's analysis of the golf. Bring back Steve Ryder I say.

Hansen for me is the biggest idiot on TV. He wants to be English.
I remember watching a tribute on Football Focus to some ould fella (we'll call him John) who worked behind the scenes on the Beeb's football coverage. He had retired after 40 years or something. All the pundits were appluading him as well as Lynam, Lineker etc. Hansen came on and said that John often shared his football knowledge with him, like the time in 1995 when he said that 'you could never win anything with kids'. He totally took the limelight off John and onto him with a pathetic attempt at a joke.
He and Lineker have this long running 'joke' where Hansen says to Lineker that the player 'should square it'. I remember the night it began - I never was as disgusted with football coverage in my life.
As the great John Giles once said about Match of the Day - 'it looks as if they don't want to talk about football. They are too interested in making jokes and playing up to the camera'.
If only they were all like you Johnny....

Don't place any bets on Jamaica winning the WC - Marlon King has just been sent home for breach of discipline Are they in the World Cup even? Re Hansen, Lineker et al. MOTD has become a farce, full of those 'in' jokes like Eamo mentioned, self-importance, posturing and quips from Alan to Lawro like 'Even you would have cut out that cross' etc etc then big guffaws all round. No analysis or informed debate and hardly worth watching. RTE all the way for the World Cup. I saw that Football Focus with the old researcher guy leaving and you're right - it showed Hansen to be an incredible dick.

Just wondering if the person who picked "other loser country" is backing any country in particular (Holland? Portugal?) or just feels that the collapse of a number of fancied teams in the last World Cup (Argentina, France, Portugal) which was attributed to players being tired after over-long seasons is set to increase this time around?
