Can anyone recommend a decent one? I'm now fed up of the more manual shaving gel + water option. For some reason I would feel uncomfortable going into a shop/pharmacy etc and asking the assistant about their range of electric razors. A bit irrational I would have thought.

I'll be jumping on this bandwagon. I dread the thoughts of shaving: it's easily the worst part of any day when I have to do it. I use that king of shaves stuff and I've gone through all the brands of razor but they're all brutal.
I was going to splash out on one of those nivea philishave things - they're like a wet or dry shave and might be worth the investment just to get rid of the chore that is shaving. I don't know anything about them though. Is that guy with the beard who likes hiking on this forum?

Don't know anything about Nivea thingy, any more info would be appreciated greatly?

To give my thru-penny bit on this issue.
Electric razors are a no-no in the Stickywithoutjam household.
It has been scientifically proven that wet shaves are the best. The control is unsurpassed and damage to the skin is much less than getting hairy aped by a junior flymo offshoot.
However there is a groundswell surrounding the Electric razor option, since I am the forum's self-elected "Health & Lifestyle" Editor I will revert back to you with some suggestions. I'll ring my VHI Nurse Hotline tonite and get the lowdown.

Should mean that it's not as harsh shaving as electric razors can be but having never used one I can't say for sure.

I don't know what it is about this site, but as soon as there is a certain topic/issue raised the Google ads kick in with appropriate merchandise-you will note that there is serious shaving kit on officer in the Google ads.
For instance, to expand on the this theory if I were to discuss "fissile nuclear material for hard water nuclear reactors", it is likely the google ads will come up with some associated merchandise-the only way to test this is to actually indulge myself by posting this nonsensical message.

Nope, it went back to the Spurs Credit card ads.

It definitely looks intentional, the "England Squad for World Cup" thread has links to nothing but "World Cup Tickets" sites, the "10/10 Albums" has links to a Bob Dylan site, and the page on "1966 Reasons" on which we debated the merits of Enid Blyton has links to childrens' books sites.
I wonder how many more billions that added to the fortune of the Google inventors.

Yep, its a bit interesting in its own right.
"30,000 Celtic Supporters...." has an advert to have Celtic carpet in your own home!
Unfortunately, the ladybody shave advert seems to be following me around abit.
But, whats the story with Spurs Credit Cards, who was going about that?

But, whats the story with Spurs Credit Cards, who was going about that? Maybe because one of the previous threads was called "Spurs fans"; I don't know why it should be coming up on this page though.

a1lovers.com/shaving-tips.html seems to know everything about shaving, although I am loathe to rely solely on interweb for any advice. Buyer Beware. I will check magazines in me garage for further shaving advice, althought not all the shaving advice may be facial.

My top tips for shaving (with some rhyming slang added):
1. Chaz and Dave (shave) against the david blaine (grain). Everyone says shave with the grain but one gentle but firm stroke against the grain is better than three or four strokes with the grain.
2. Always clean your blade with cold water between strokes. If you clean it with hot water the metal expands and will cause your blade to go blunt.
3. After washing your blade in cold water just give it a second under the hot tap as this is not as mike marsh/rodney marsh (harsh) on your skin.
4. If you have time put some shaving foam in a dish and heat it up in the microwave before applying it on your face (brendan grace).
5. At the end of your shave rinse your face with cold water as this helps to close the pores.

Cheers Humbug - I've printed out your missive, put it inside a nice laminate covering and placed it neatly in my shaving bag. Purchased the Philips Coolskin today for 100 europeans - excitedly getting ready to read the instructions now! Fook - just had a debut shave there with the Coolskin. Immense it was and I'd recommend to all. Rock, it's officially called the Nivea Philishave or something and it's the one you mentioned above. You insert a little cartridge of Nivea gel in the back of the razor so it's not a totally dry shave. Very comfortable it was for me. Thanks to the forum for guiding me to this razor. If this website achieves nothing else then I'll be happy. ;D

Nearly looking forward to my next shave now. Bandage let us know how you got on.

I'm not sure what the exact forum etiquette is in relation to returning to a thread that hasn't received a post since 12 May 2006 but something else has occurred to me.
After you shave, instead of drying your face and neck with a towel, dry yourself with a clean t shirt. I've been doing this for quite a while now and I've noticed a marked reduction in shave rash. I'm not sure of the science behind this but it just feels much better...must be the texture or something. Try it.

Apparently one should pat your face dry with a towel, not rub it dry.
Helps avoid the redness associated with shaving normally.
I've started using the King of Shaves stuff, that therock998karma mentioned, about three weeks ago, tis good tack. It gets the whyohwhy stamp of approval

i wonder what eamo uses to make his face nice and smooth so that when he shoves it up bandage's arse it doesn't cause too much discomfort for bandage, or maybe bandage likes it rough.

Removal of the head would mean going "against the grain" thus resulting in an extra smooth shave. As a disclaimer this method could incur serious health ramifications and no i have not used this methond myself...........yet

Resurrecting this thread to say how thoroughly delighted I am with the Nivea Philishave. One of the best €100 I've ever spent. Am recommending to all and you can exalt me for it as I've a ridiculously low karma level at present.

Would be interested to hear if you are still as satisfied with that razor as you were a few weeks ago. Have been thinking about getting one but was put off by my housemates experience with one. He spent something like 140euros on one, it was fantastic to start with and he was delighted with it. However after about a month and a half it seemed to get very blunt and would hurt when he shaved or would take far longer to shave than when first bought. Your comments at this point would be appreciated.

i paid 90 bills for one there a few weeks ago but i've stopped using it already. really need to use it every day otherwise the hair is too long and it will keep missing bits here and there. also found it causes even more irritation than standard razors.....although maybe that's just my sensitive skin.
fooking waste though......i could have got a couple of 3min dances in angels with that money

I don’t use mine all that much anymore either. Mainly because I can’t find the special nivea gel anywhere. It can be irritating enough without using that stuff so I wouldn’t advise buying one to be honest. Yet another one of my stupid decisions.

I'm still using mine. I only ever shave once or twice a week and it can be a bit annoying shaving slightly longer hair but it still works for me. I like the handiness of shaving in the shower but I expect that the two negative reviews above will be enough to sway you against it.
(They sell the gel in Power City in Coolock by the way).
