Maradona for me summed up everything great about football. He was supremely talented, and had some personality. He was a star. Unlike Pele (or Platini, Charlton and the likes), he is not a g0bsh1te today, obsessed with FIFA and saying that David Beckham is the world's best player.
On a purely footbll side, Maradona won the World Cup and Seria A by himself. Pele could never claim to have done this.

Maradona for me too, though I downloaded a video of Pele the other day that I haven't watched yet and everyone is raving about it for showing how good he was. I certainly have proper memories of Maradona which certainly helps and I've recently modded my Pro Evolution Soccer 5 to feature all the teams and clubs from 1994 and 1986 so I've been playing with him virtually again and it's sheer pleasure!

Perhaps the best world cup goal ever-1986 against England when he went around 6 (?) players and Peter Reid twice!

Maradona may be a legend but he was not as good as Pele on the field. The poll was 'Greatest Footballer of all time' so I don't think Pele's current status is relevant. Winning 3 world cups(granted didn't play all of '62), one singlehandedly as a 17year old, scoring a hat-trick in the semis and a pair in the final. Playing 20years with the same club, winning numerous tropies. Again though it is hard to really compare the two as they came from different footballing eras and Pele never got the chance to play in Europe.

I remember seeing an interview with Diego about that goal. He was speaking in Spanish with subtitles. Every now and again he mentioned names like 'Fenwick'. That must have been the greatest moment of Terry Fenwick's career, to be known and rememebered by Maradona.
Anyone remember Maradona as the mystery guest on Question of Sport? They basically filmed some Maradona double and then cut in a shot of Maradona looking at the camera. They got that by turning up at some event he was doing and shouting 'Hey Diego'

maradona for me. pele was the ultimate professional, respected by everyone and a perfect role model, but he was predictable, as in everyone knew he was going to turn up and score a sack load of goals.
maradona was a totally different animal. like pele he was universally lauded as one of the greatest footballers ever but he had a certain unpredictability about him; he had a form of split personality - sometimes being a footballing genius and sometimes being simply a flawed genius. people loved watching him in anticipation of what he might do. would pele ever have punched a goal in a wc semi? setting side the fact that it was against the brits, it was something that just wasn't done in those days, and people loved it. USA 94 we all expected to see a shambles of a player pull on the no 10 shirt.....then he goes and scores an absolute screamer before runnning to the crowd and shoving his big fat coked up head into the nearest camera.......ok, then tests positive and gets sent home.....but thats part of why we loved him. mere mortals like us could identify with him. he never came close to being the perfect sportsman like pele, and while the purists may prefer to have 10 peles in their favourite team, i know which footballer i'd rather watch.
and also, i heard pele was a steamer

maradona for me, had it all and got the living sh*t kicked out of him in the process.
the fact that his life was ruined by witch-doctors and the mafia and his obsession based personality is sad
