This will probably get co-opted into being a thread of abuse for various forum members, but just couldn't let this pass.
Per [ftp]www.rte.ie[/ftp]:
"The Minister [for Education] has also called on third level colleges to accept pupils of Leaving Certificate foundation level mathematics into their institutions. Mary Hanafin said pupils are doing ordinary level mathematics to get into third level when perhaps they should be doing foundation level mathematics.
High failure rates in both Science and Mathematics have been recorded. More than 4,000 students have failed this year's ordinary level mathematics paper."
So students are failing not even Higher but Ordinary Level Maths, and the problem isn't that the teachers are too incompetent, or the students too thick or too lazy (apologies to anyone with valid reasons, but I doubt there can be 4,000 of them), to pass, but rather that our standards are too high? I think whether its relevant for their immediate future or not, a decent level of maths is important for everyone. And I don't know if one even gets that by passing Ordinary Level Maths, but I can't imagine you get it by failing.
The youth of today.
And the fooking policitians.

ordinary maths was the most pathetically simple exam i ever sat in my life (i only sat it because i was too lazy to continue with honours, which i didn't need for college). i can't imagine how anybody of reasonable intellect could fail that paper. if someone can't manage ordinary maths then it's quite obvious that continuing along an academic path is the wrong option.
what's next, allowing illiterates in to degrade the name of our 3rd level institutions?

Have to agree with you there law. I can understand how people find higher level maths tough because it is conceptually difficult. The problem lies in the structure and teaching of maths at ordinary level however, not with the third level institutions.

I totally agree. I didnt take Honours maths because the level of study for it was too high, ordinary level on the other hand was a walk in the park which left time to focus evenly on other subjects. To allow people with foundation maths into 3rd level would make a mockery of 3rd level institutions. Sure for any apprentinceship you need to have a decent level of maths to achieve anything.
Next step will be to make ordinary level the standard of foundation and pretend nothing has changed.

She (the minister for (mis)education) is basically saying that she has failed at her job of improving educational standards in Ireland and wants the 3rd level institutions to bale her out. Muppet.
Agree on ordinary level maths, walk in the park, piss easy etc etc etc.
Idiots who fail it should be steered towards apprenticeships etc not college. Waste of everyones time, having them in college.

Here was me thinking this was a thread to speculate where we’d all head later to celebrate LC results!
Agree totally re Hanafin. There is no foundation whatsoever to her argument. The ordinary man on the street will tell you that and not necessarily anyone with a higher intellect.

apparently o'connell bridge was full of youngsters drinking cans and waving little green slips of paper just after 9 this morning - could have been the LC crowd.
kids today eh? they'd put us to shame with early starts like that. pity (for them) most were probably puking/asleep/both by lunch.

Are the birds in ‘twentyone’ not a little bit too old for you sam? Thought you’d be saving yourself for Wesley come junior cert results day?

There won't be any 'bush' in 'twentyone' - plenty of young birds though!

was reading a piece in the herald during my late afternoon break (as opposed to my early afternoon, mid afternoon, early morning, mid morning and late morning breaks) that there's a big do in Kobra for the LCs. Apparently the organisers were advertising "free jello shots, wet t-shirt competitions & ky wrestling". where was all that shit when we got our results??!!!

I presume you went to the now defunct Redz niteclub in Wexford town in July 1999 after boldly throwing a few Bulmer’s into you in the now defunct Mooney’s disco bar, bopped away to Ann Lee’s ‘2 Times’, that ‘Blue da ba da ba da’ song and then scored some complete and utter munter during the slowset (Westlife: ‘Flying Without Wings’ probably).
You know I'm right.

You know I'm right. very weird day actually: went to a funeral in the morning, pub crawl in the afternoon, played a hurling match (championship) in the evening against your former club (and won), then as you said hit mooneys & redz, scored the obligatory munter during the slowset (or "erection section" as it was known in club c). Given the fashion in Wexford at the time she was probably wearing a pair of wrangler jeans, a denim lee cooper shirt with only the top button open and a nice pair of brogues (in case hands wandered anywhere other than the lower back she could deliver a sturdy kick to the shins followed by one to the groin). The night was rounded off by a bit of bopping to Alice Deejay's "Better Off Alone". The kids these days don't know what they're missing.

What a joke! Can you imagine how simple the questions must be in foundation maths. Fair enough plenty of people do ordinary level but foundation is just taking the piss. Enough muppets get into college as it is without opening it up to a shower of thicko's.
My sister used to invigilate the exams and remember her bringing home a foundation English paper for the junior cert. It was Ann and Barry kinda stuff. They had a picture of the cover of a video (think it was The Fugitive if I recall) and the questions were along the lines of who is the leading actor and also how long does the film run for. Thought they were taking the piss! Don't think there is any excuse for having a foundation level course.
Back to the real point of the thread, i.e. the celebrations for the LC. D2 was cracking last year for the JC results where BT was found to be singing "Six A's in your Junior Cert..." until the wee hours, maybe would be good for the LC results?

I no im about 3 months late but anyway i do think people who do foundation maths should be allowed into colleges. Esp people with dyslexia etc. I have dyslexia (please dont take d piss!) and had a huge amount of pressure on me to pass ordinary level maths just so i could get into college, I had to get grinds 3 times a week and learning support every day (grinds were 30 euro a pop) just to get into fookin college.
