I know there's a few Liverpool fans around these parts. I presume I'm not alone in thinking the reported 6.2m bid for Pennant is about 5.2m too high. A truly astounding signing for that price imho. He has flattered to deceive in a relegated team and is notorious for ill discipline and immaturity. With Duff going for 5m surely they should have bid for him with Gonzalez being able to play on the right I believe. Almost as laughable as West Brom putting a 12m price tag on their young central defender Curtis Davies.

Pennant's price tag is crazy alright though it's nothing compared to the Curtis Davies lark. Good God that lad is a touch expensive.
I think Portsmouth are bumping up prices for the mediocre players this summer, much like Chelsea inflated the prices of top players. I cannot believe a multi-millionaire would be naive enough to allow Harry Redknapp to blow all his cash though.
Anyway, back to the point: Pennant is ok. Nothing more. Duff is miles ahead in terms of consistency, experience and sobriety.

Agreed on Redknapp. Imagine letting him loose with all that cash - it's very risky though the Russian there seems to be have been totally won over by him keeping them up last year. I had wondered would he give him the shove and get in a real world name to coach there (entice them with a ridiculously large salary plus the war chest) so that high quality players might be tempted to go there. In fairness I'm sure most top quality players are not going to be drawn by the lure of playing for Redknapp. They are making bids for a lot of players - 10m for that young Portuguese guy plus a reported 4.5m bid for Gareth Barry over the weekend. That's why Celtic should hold out over Petrov and wait until their valuation is met.
Chelsea don't seem to care about making losses on players. Del Horno gone for 4.8m after signing last year for 8m and Duff gone for a reported 5m. Portsmouth and themselves are totally inflating the transfer market and everyone's trying to make a quick buck.

with duff in newky, i'd have put in a bid for milner, similar right-side of midfield player with none of the baggage of pennant and in my view just as effective and a better future prospect.

Think they did put in a bid for Duff which was accepted by Chelsea but he fooked off up to play for Newcastle. He said it was to do with the fans and the passion of the club, I think it was because he would have had to take a pay cut to join Liverpool and Newcastle were the only team to match or beat has Chelsea wages.

I genuinely don't think he was motivated by money in choosing Newcastle. I could be naive because they do offer big wages - that's what attracted Owen reportedly. I do think he acted hastily though because Liverpool or Spurs would have been a much better move for him. Liverpool's interest never seemed to be all that enthusiastic. I find it hard to believe they couldn't have landed him if they'd really gone for it, given their proximity to Blackburn.

Liverpool are starting a great collection of scumbags aren't they, first Bellamy now Pennant, must have only just missed out on Lee Bowyer.

Was actually coming on here principally to say wtf is going on with £6.2m for Pennant? I know I said in a previous thread that he could be worth picking up as a squad player for 3-3.5m but 6.2m is simply ludicrous. Good point re: Milner Cully. Zoltan Gera would also be a much better signing, for half the price presumably, and is much more likely to score goals. Kinda thought after Rafa purchased Bellamy (whom I'm really looking forward to seeing) that he had a 4-2-3-1 type formation in mind, as follows:
Reina Finnan, Carragher, Hyypia, Riise Alonso, Sissoko, Bellamy, Gerrard, Gonzalez Fowler/Crouch
I'd be reasonably happy with that - ideally we need another two strikers (not Kuyt). I'd give the nod to Fowler if he gets a good pre-season under his belt and Rafa has come out and praised his movement in the first couple of pre-season friendlies which is what he has struggled with for the past x number of seasons. Guaranteed 15 goals from Fowler if he played 30+ EPL games. Bags of pace there to frighten the shi'it out of defenders as well - although I've not seen much of Gonzalez the snippets I have seen have been impressive. And Gerrard/Bellamy are well able to find the net.
Know nothing about Aurelio.
Palletta apparently is your typical Argentine bruiser - am quite happy that we got such a player.
I take it the signing of Pennant means Alves won't be coming either. I kinda thought that Alves would be atking Finnan's place but now signing Pennant has thrown me off completely. Don't know what the starting team will be.

i have a long shot theory that given his injury proneness, Duffer will only be fit for the knackers yard in a couple of years, hence Chelsea are content to take a huge hit on him, Liverpool weren't really bothered about him this time, Spurs cooled off and Newcastle only took him to please the fans and get one or two decent seasons out of him. Good move for Duffer in that nobody would bat an eyelid if he ended up crocked after playing with the toon for a while given their chronic injury problems over the past couple of years....

I think it's shocking that he's turned down Valencia and Inter Milan again apparently because with his pale complexion he reckons it'd be too warm and humid for him in Spain or Italy. Turning down champions league so he can put his feet up at Newcastle smacks of a serious lack of ambition on his part.

I don't think he was motivated by money but by Christ he lacks ambition and motivation. And to think how the Irish press love to mock Bobby Keane. At least he gave Serie A a go.

As a Liverpool fan I'm concerned about Pennant coming to the club, maybe they could ask the cops to put an electronic tag on him again. Could be handly for when he's out on the rip. As the Villa banner said about O' Leary, "I'm not fickle, I just don't like the guy." Less worried about Bellamy, sure he has a nasty mouth on him and loves himself far too much, but with his blinding pace and eye for goal I'll turn a blind eye. Amazed by Duff's move, and not just because he turned Liverpool down - I think Spurs would have been a better bet than Newcastle by far. Like some of the other posts I'm not jumping to any conclusions that he went for the money, though it would certainly help. I'm hearing two theories as to why he snubbed Liverpool - the first is that he was already in advanced negotiations with Newcastle when they registered their interest, thus leaving it too late. The second is that while Newcastle were begging and grovelling (understandably!), Rafa Benitez was treating it more like a job interview with the attitude that he can guarantee Champs League football - so the ball was in Duff's court as to how much he wanted it.
