What’s your favourite ever goal? Not necessarily the best as regards quality but the one that meant most to you.
Mine, without doubt, is Michael Jacob for Wexford versus Kilkenny in the Leinster Hurling Semi Final on 13 June 2004. That date and moment will be etched in my memory forever.
Also a mention for Rory McCarthy’s last ditch leveller against Cork in the 2003 All Ireland Semi Final Replay and the 21 yard free Damien Fitzhenry buried to the net to defeat Limerick by a point in the 2001 All Ireland Quarter Final.
Also Craig Burley and Paul Lambert’s belters against Rangers in the New Year’s Old Firm game in the 1 in a row season, Henrik Larsson’s chip to make it 6-2 in Martin O’Neill’s first Old Firm game and his 2 goals in the UEFA Cup Final against Porto.
Also Robbie Keane’s goal against Germany in the World Cup in 2002. Jason McAteer’s goal against the Dutch in qualifying for that tournament and Ray Houghton’s goals against England and Italy in Euro 88 and Italia 90 respectively.
Also Kevin Horlock and Paul Dickov’s injury time goals against Gillingham in the Division 2 Play Off Final in 1999 that hauled City back from being dead and buried at 2-0 down. Shaun Goater’s 2 goals in the last ever Manchester derby played at Maine Road in November 2002 and Jon Macken’s header in injury time in the cup against Spurs that saw ten man City come back from 3-0 down to dump Spurs out of the FA Cup in February 2004.
What’s the best ever goal you’ve ever seen when actually playing in a game?
Mine would have to be Faythe Harriers’ third goal of four in the County Wexford U-12 Hurling Final against Cloughbawn in 1993. After scoring all his team’s points in the game (1 free, 2 from play) a tired young Bandage picked up possession near half way with the famed Harriers clinging on to a one point lead near the end of the game (2-3 to 2-2). After making some ground towards goal he delivered a drilled pass low in towards the full forward line. The left footed Paddy Haughton (Bandage’s handball doubles partner) made a dash towards the ball from his right corner forward position, controlled the ball with his hurley and instead of catching it in his hand, swivelled and caught the sliothar flush on the volley from about 14 yards out and watched it fly into the top corner of the net. The most outrageous goal I have ever seen. Typical Paddy Haughton though.
