You quote Boyd and Negri - this is Boyd's first season of scoring regularly. He could be compared to someone like Darren Bent in the EPL. Again it's back to the EPL versus SPL argument. Neither are fit to lace Larsson's boots. Negri was a nutter as far as I recall. Had an incredibly good season and then disappeared into oblivion - hard to make a rational argument one way or the other in his case. You know I disagree that playing for Celtic is a comfort zone - I've posted this before on this thread so we'll have to agree to differ.

Neither Kris Boyd nor Marco Negri have scoring records to compare with Larsson in the SPL. Boyd scored 5, 12 and 15 with Kilmarnock before this season. Larsson was miles ahead of that. Negri got 32 goals in one season, a decent return but it was a one-off. Larsson outshone everyone else in the league consistently.
Many of Larsson's Swedish caps came as a midfielder - he didn't play as a centre forward for Sweden until he joined Celtic so his record is very comparable to Henry's when you consider the times they both played centre forward.
Glad to see you're not suggesting Fowler is in the same league however.

Marco Negri and Kris Boyd only did it for one season. There is no way you can compare them to Larsson who scored on average 35goals per season in his 7 years there. I'm sure ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ ) will tell you that Larsson holds the record for the top scorer for a british club in European Competitions. To say he hasn't proven himself is b*ll*x.

Glad to see you're not suggesting Fowler is in the same league however. No, Fowler scored goals for fun in a much better league. My post re: Fowler clearly refers to international level. He was unlucky. I blame Hoddle.

I'm entitled to my opinion as regards Larsson.
Of course we all know that Larsson scored a rake of goals over a number of years. My point regarding Negri and Boyd is that quite average players can score goals in the SPL (granted they didn't do it over the same number of years).
Does Larsson's sensational scoring record in Scotland not suggest to any of ye that he was playing below himself?

Maybe he's too good for that too? Maybe he's too good to play and should have retired long ago?

He was unlucky. I blame Hoddle. I have to take exception to that. He didn't score goals for fun. Starting with this season his record in the Premiership for goals is 5, 10 7, 4, 15, 8, 3, 14, 9, 18, 28, 25, 12. Obviously he threatened to be an excellent striker at the start but his record since 1999 is dismal. He has also never scored goals in a major competition. It really beggars belief that you honestly believe him comparable to Larsson. Van Nistelrooy, Shearer and Henry you could argue about forever because like Larsson they were all world class players. Fowler was more like Rebrov-class. Decent for a few years but never fulfilled his potential.

From the Beeb
Celtic will make another move for Hearts midfielder Paul Hartley if Stilian Petrov leaves the Scottish champions, BBC Sport understands. Celtic have rejected an official transfer request from the Bulgaria captain but the 26-year appears determined to move away from Scotland.
Hearts twice knocked back Celtic offers for Hartley, 29, last year.
And the Scotland international signed a new three-year contract at Tynecastle in August.
Celtic first made an approach for Hartley in January 2005 but Hearts held on to their man, despite the player submitting a transfer request.
Celtic resumed their interest in Hartley in July but Hearts laughed off the £300,000 bid before agreeing a contract extension with the midfielder.
Hartley has enjoyed a wonderful season at Hearts, scoring 15 goals, including a hat-trick in the Scottish Cup semi-final.

Sad to see him go but hopefully we will get some good money for him. Would be disgusted if he went for anything less then 6/7million. As was mentioned yesterday, I hope he doesn't go to a middle of the road EPL team and waste his talent there. Hartley is not the answer. Naka could take over Petrov's role as attacking midfielder and play Maloney and McGeady on the wings.

Hartley is certainly not the answer. I'd have had nothing against signing him a year ago for 500k and getting 3 SPL years out of him but I can't believe he'd be a viable option in Europe at this stage.

Just to drag the Larsson argument back up:
Articles like this just remind of what we were blessed to have!!
RONALDINHO will tonight attempt to fire Barcelona into the final of the Champions League - to provide a fitting farewell for Henrik Larsson.
The world's greatest player describes former Celtic hero Larsson as his idol and would like nothing more than to help the Swede leave the Spanish giants with the game's biggest club medal in his pocket.
Larsson will quit the Nou Camp at the end of the season to return to Sweden, where he will see out his career at Helsingborgs.
And while Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho believes Larsson could easily play on at the highest level, he insists he has too much respect for his team-mate to try to persuade him to stay longer than he wants in the Catalan capital.
Barcelona face AC Milan in tonight's semi-final second leg having secured a 1-0 win in the San Siro last week.
Now Ronaldinho and his mates are determined to finish the job at the Nou Camp and set up a final appearance in the Stade de France next month.
Larsson will miss the match with a hamstring injury, although he should be fit within weeks.
The Champions League Final would mark his last match for Barcelona and Ronaldinho admits he'll miss his mate when he leaves.
He said: "With Henrik leaving us at the end of the season this club is losing a great scorer, no question. But I amalso losing a great friend. Henrik was my idol and now that I am playing next to him it is fantastic.
"He is a real friend and that is a pleasure. I just want to enjoy the remaining time he has with us rather than dwell on what we will be missing when he's gone.
"I haven't t ried to convince Henrik to stay at Barcelona. I respect him so much that I can't try to influence his decision.
"It's something he has thought about for a long time. I'm not happy he's leaving but I'm not going to pressure him at all.
"At Henrik's age many players announce their retirement from international football but no one I know his age is at the great physical level Henrik is at right now. He could play at the highest level for a long time."
