Shane McGowan isn't cool, he's an alcoholic idiot who has destroyed his talent by crazy levels of drinking for the last 25 years or so.

Freddie Mercury
(I don't care, I think he's class) (& smite to anyone who thought "now that explains a lot")
Does Johnny Cash count, or is he the coolest country star ever?

Keith Richards (even after his recent fall out of a tree). Ritchie Blackmore purely because of his outrageous arrogance
More to follow...

Johnny Cash would have to qualify as on of the Coolest Rock Stars Ever. He had the "soul" of a rock and roll star
Another few: Lou Reed David Crosby (although he did lose the plot later on in life) Steve Marriot - Mod Icon Paul Weller - Modfather

Shane McGowan isn't cool, he's an alcoholic idiot who has destroyed his talent by crazy levels of drinking for the last 25 years or so. Jim Morrison, Phil Lynott and Jeff Buckley are dead because of their excesses. Iggy Pop, Axl Rose are infamous abusers of drugs and alcohol. Why single out MacGowan for mention? Still performing, still writing songs. He may be an alcoholic but he's no idiot.

In an Irish context I'd like to suggest Fearghal McKee. Loads of enigma about that man and anyone who burns a Sunday Independent on stage is alright by me.

Are Jime Morrison etc more rock and roll because they are dead, or are you saying Axl Rose etc were more clever? ? Yours Confuesd Rangers

Rory Gallagher was cool, great music, loved the gargle but wasn't as over the top as some aforementioned rock stars.(Even though he died of pneumonia after getting a liver transplant)

Yours Confuesd Rangers I'm pointing out that tommymoore reckons that Shane MacGowan isn't cool because he's an alcoholic yet half the guys named so far died because of drugs and alcohol so I reckon he has something else against MacGowan or else double standards.

OK. I dont rate him as a cool rock star. He's just a mess on stage, and he hasnt really shown that spark of genius that we have seen from Jim Mojo, Philo and Buckeres (I would not class Axl Rose as a cool rock star - no moments of ingenuity). So id like to clarify, they must have shown in their careers a consistent period of genius.

The only thing I have against McGowan is that he wasted his talent. He may still be performing and writing songs but he had the talent to go a lot further than he did. Bye all accounts his latest performances are an absolute joke. He turns up hammered, hours late at times and you can hardly make out the songs he's singing. He had the world at his feet when he was with the Pogues in the 80s and wasted it all. That's why I referred to him as an idiot.

At least he's still alive. Why don't you have a go at Morrison or Buckley (dubious circumstances) or Lynnot? Did they not waste their talent?
I've yet to be disappointed by a MacGowan gig (Popes or Pogues) and I wonder if you've been? It might be an immature attitude to alcohol abuse but I don't want a clean-shaven, good looking, well-behaved man singing Fairytale of New York on the 23rd December. I want a drunken mess to be perfectly honest.
Also there is a common viewpoint out there that his work since the Pogues is of an inferior quality. That's a load of crap. Humbug has quoted some lyrics from The Crock of Gold on the lyrics thread that are as witty and biting as ever. Some of the songs on The Snake are exceptional - particularly the re-released version with Hanuted and You're the One. I'm off to the Lyrics thread to post some of the words.

No never been to a Pogues gig but one of my mates was at his concert in Limerick a few years back and another was at one in the Oymypia last year and they both said the same thing, absolute thrash. If your looking for a drunken mess to sing fairytale of New York then you've got the right man in McGowan.
