No never been to a Pogues gig but one of my mates was at his concert in Limerick a few years back and another was at one in the Oymypia last year and they both said the same thing, absolute thrash. If your looking for a drunken mess to sing fairytale of New York then you've got the right man in McGowan. Placing a lot of faith in the opinions of the mates. I've been to see him five times I think altogether and I've loved them all - particuarly the Christmas gigs. The man is a legend. You still haven't addressed why you're not criticising the other booze hounds named? Is it because you don't know anyone who's ever been at one of their gigs?

In an aside to Shane MacGowan
MacGowan was playing a concert in my home town last year (maybe 2 years ago) and he went from pub to pub in a wheelchair, so he didnt have to walk, he was capable of walking, but used the wheelchair as he was so fooking lazy and wanted to get the booze in to him, witout having to worry about his legs.

Don't really feel like defending MacGowan here because, as far as I'm concerned, God does not need defending.

Shane McGowan isn't cool, he's an alcoholic idiot who has destroyed his talent by crazy levels of drinking for the last 25 years or so. Jim Morrison, Phil Lynott and Jeff Buckley are dead because of their excesses. Jeff Buckley died from drowning in the Mississippi - no excess there...

Here's mine:
Bob Dylan (seeing him on Scorsese's documentary was incredible. Despite writing some of the most incredible music ever, he is just an ordinary guy)
Will Oldham (saw him in Whelans and is just an ordinary guy who sings some really fucked up shit)
Shane McGowan (anybody who has heard his music could not but be amazed. However, like JP Dunleavy, I think all this alcoholism is just for show. If he drank as much as he portrays then he would be dead)
Luke Kelly (See McGowan but a true alcoholic. Not that this is makes him a legend. His voice does.)
Ronnie Drew (see Kelly, but not in the same league of legendess)
Black Francis/Frank Black/Charles Thompson (I went to see the Pixies in Phoenix Park for their comeback gig and it was the greatest I have ever been at. They were supporting Chilli Peppers and I left after the Pixies! No talking between songs just belting away again)
Ferghall McKee pissed me off at that gig. 'We want a revolution, say it'. I don't want a revolution. But he did burn the Sunday Independent.
Nick Cave - for being a genius.
Boo to Morrissey and Michael Stipe that headed, along with the Pixies, the three greatest bands ever. Morrissey is deeply obnoxious and Stipe needs to grow up. A line from Gareth in The Office (not in the same league as Only Fools and Horses remember) springs to mind. 'I am not homophobic. Just look at my record collection. George Michael, Queen, Elton John. They're all bummers'
