As I'm going on study leave Cully has suggested that now is the time for a 'life audit'. One of my aims for the period is to bulk up a wee bit as I'm quite straggly and scrawny. While I will endeavour to get to the gym frequently I was wondering should I supplement this with protein shakes, weight gain solution, creatine or some such. I've thought about it before and dismissed it as being too radical and generally don't like taking 'unnatural' things into my body. For example I try to avoid medicine as much as possible. Are there any long term effects associated with the above or is it safe as houses?

Get it all into you and worry about the consequences after. Grind up a pack of creatine into a protein shake and have three of those babies a day. Maybe you'll come back after the summer and I won't even recognise you.

Surely they'll have a cure for whatever is wrong with you, when you are afflicted by it in your 40's (assuming your not in your 40's now).
I tried that Creatine stuff for a while back in school (not school sponsored creatine intake), made me feel quite sick (nausea and vomiting) after training so I binned it.
But if you come back looking like the Hulk, sure til be worth it

Eat some tampons, they'll definitely bulk you up.

I would advise you to steer clear of all that stuff. Your best bet is just to eat a healthy diet. Headaches and acne are possible side effects but I found, when I tried protein shakes a while back, that my sleep was affected. All these supplements are designed to give you energy boosts so it is bound to have some kind of impact on your sleep. Eat well and sleep well and exercise properly and you will bulk up no problem.

Proper sensible advice from Humbug so I'll go along with that.
I'd recommend you eat loads of pasta (carbs and protein) and exercise well. You'll burn off any excesses but you should also become fitter and bulkier.
Also stop drinking tea or coffee. Plenty of the body's energy is wasted on detoxifying tea and coffee so you'll be more energetic if you cut it out which will lead to a greater capacity for exercise and ultimately a healthier appearance.

Usually drink 5-8 cups of tea a day so will need to cut down. Used to drink about 2 litres of coke a day. Now it varies but never more than a litre - will need to cut that out too. Juice, milk and smoothies for me.

Got a Smoothie Maker myself lately, great machine; lob in the fruit, a bit of juice, press the button and hey presto a tasty healthy beverage. I've probably had more fruit in the last 2 weeks, than i've had in the previous two years. Definitely feeling the benefits of it already, loads of energy.
Only €60 yo-yos in argos for it

lyonsee, when i was in the gym regularly i used casilan 90, it's protein. was recommended to me by my physio who does alot of work with some serious duty irish athletes, he's the guru in my view. you can get it in the chemist and it only costs about a tenner, it'll keep you going for ages. i used to blend it into some milk, add some nesquik flavoured drink mix and drink it before and after a session. makes you apple tart like a mad thing though. however, if you better your diet and get in the gym regularly i think you will see the effects, you are a scrawny fook so i reckon you'll notice the effects of regular gym training quite quickly. i'd go for it. looking forward to checking you out on your return from study leave

I am a scrawny fook but I've always just thought that was my natural build and despite gym work I'd still be very slight. This is why I was going to explore the 'unnatural' route and go with protein shakes and whatnot. We'll see.

Sure you might grow some breast, but who doesn't like breasts?

Far more entertaining to stay healthy and take up a sport and play it regularly - three times a week - and you'll become more athletic.

Agree to an extent but I wouldn't be in a position to play soccer at any sort of a decent level given my current state of unfitness. Accordingly I'll spend some time in the gym til I can train again with a junior club in Galway this August. Also, there's not enough upper body work in soccer.
Hope to play a bit of tennis too but if you want to see decent results I think it's gotta be the gym.

if you are a skinny guy -protein shakes will do fvck all for you - I suggest you take steroids - we have decca, dball, sustinence etc etc in our gym and the effects are amazing -sure a couple of people have serious kidney malfunctions, swollen testicles, mood swings but they are just the unlucky ones and even they would say it was worth it - remember to use a clean spike each time -these can be obtained from pearce street or merchants quay where the junkies go -skin pop above your hip and you are ready
if you have a girlfriend she will notice the difference -especially when you batter her head in with your fists for not having the tea out in time

Zidane. Could explain Sunday.

Is there much about the Juve drugs scanadal in Calcio (the book) law? Only 3 pages. The author is hampered by the fact that he has to cover the entire history of Italian football. Paddy Agnew (in his book Forza Italia) is actually much better on this topic, as since he is only covering Italian football since 1985 he has the space to devote an entire chapter (32 pages) to the Juve scandal.

So did you take the creatine plunge lyonsee? Nope, going with natural methods. Trying to eat right. 3 good meals a day. Cereal, eggs, tuna, apples, bananas, Danone Bio Activia, ham, chicken, pasta, orange juice, plenty of water. Gym regime will hopefully start next week. My mate who gets me in free has been away much to my consternation.

Steroids and creatine both make your manhood shrivel up. Don't even dream about either! What the dieticians would tell you is eat as soon as possible after physical exhurtion. eg. if you're going to the gym have a meal prepared beforehand so that you can eat as soon as you get back home, ideally within 30 mins, that's when the muscles will absorb most protein. Another tip they give is small meals often, rather than big meals seldom - the body can only convert a small amount of protein at a time so a massive steak for example is not going to give you any huge boost. Before some smart a##e asks me how I know about the symptoms of steroid/creatine abuse the answer is a former inter-county footballer told me that one as fact, and he played for Wexford so don't get too smart administrators (well you will of course but at least I asked!)
