Anyone on this fine institution of a forum know anything about torrents and downloading? i.e. whats its all about? what software (if any) does one need? what are the catches? whos the best etc etc?
Obviously I'm sure this forum and its administators do not condone illegal downloads of any kind as artists need the cash, badly.

Indeed, illegal donloading is to be frowned upon and is not condoned by this site.
Having said that: here's what you need.
Download a bit torrent client - loads of them out there but I recommend azureus. Should be handy to find by searching for it and it is freely available.
Install that baby.
This is the program that allows you to download torrents themselves.
Then you need to go to a website that tracks torrents that are available for download. Examples include torrentreactor.net torrentspy.com and mininova.org There are many out there but they come and go.
Find a torrent that you want to download and click to download the small torrent file. This is a small document that will download in about two seconds - which basically tells your torrent client where to find the file to download.
Once you have that file it will probably open your client (azureus) automatically. If it doesn't open your client and then go file, open or whatever and find the little file you downloaded. The client will now start downloading the whole file.
Advantages of torrents are that it doesn't need to download the file in any particular order: it donwloads whatever piece of it that it can find and assembles it all at the end. You download from other users who have already downloaded the entire file or part of it. For example if you were downloading a legally available movie then you could be downloading the second scene while sharing the fourth scene that you've already downloaded with someone else. In other words the whole thing works quicker than other peer to peer programmes because you're not depending on a single source for your file.
Catches are basically that you are still dependent on other people sharing whatever file you want to download and you are limited as to speed by how quickly they can upload.
Issues to note are:
1. When selecing a file to download look at the seeds to leeches ratio. Seeds are people that are sharing the file, leeches are downloaders. The more leeches the slower the download and it can be painfully slow.
2. Not sure how the technology works but it appears that the more you share, the quicker you download. In any case it is considered very bad form to hit and run (i.e. download the entire thing and then not share it) and many sites will ban you if they catch you doing it. Anything over a ratio of 1:1 is considered fair. When you are downloading you can see how much you have shared with other people. Because most people have bigger download than upload speed you might have downloaded the entire file and only shared half of it back. In this case leave the torrent running until you have shared as much as you have downloaded.
3. Try a smallish torrent and don't give up on it. At the start it might seem slow but they tend to speed up after you have downloaded a chunk. If it doesn't work with a particular file try another because some work better than others (depending on the availability of files).
4. There may be issues with setting what ports to use for your torrent client. Complicated to go into here but if your torrent doesn't work or is painfully slow let me know and I'll explain it.
5. Not for work I presume.
