what a footballer. Everything you want in a striker and destroyed that overrated pretender Carra. Reo-Coker the outstanding midfield player in the game also, what a traveesty. Gerrard - 6 touches in the game and 2 goals. Sick

I didn't watch the game but I was watching the highlights and after everyone claiming Gerrard was awesome it was funny hearing the commentators saying how ineffective he'd been. I think a lot of pundits revised their opinions when the goals went in.
Chris Kamara picked his premiership XI on Goals on Sunday. Laughably he had Carragher in as left back!

Smite. You're some fooking dope. Ashton didn't destroy Carragher. Carragher fooked up once - that was all. Carra has easily been the 2nd best centre half in EPL over the last two seasons. Presumably you think Distin and Dunne have been better? Ashton is a nice player, very tidy, good in the air, great at linking play etc but he wasn't uber fantastic in the cup final. He did a few things well.
As regards Gerrard, when are you going to admit that he's a class act? If he had 6 touches like that in every game I'd be ecstatic. If he played for City he'd be the best the world has ever seen in your eyes. Reo-Coker had a good game but clearly didn't have the same impact as Gerrard. Clever ball for Crouch's (correctly) disallowed goal. Cracking ball for Cisse's goal. Right place, right time for his first goal and sensational strike for his second. A couple of nice bits of link-up play as well that I remember in the first half.
Benayoun was West Ham's best player by a distance for me.

I dont know for the life of me how anyone could slag Gerrard after scoring the greatest goal in an FA Cup final when his team really needed it. Surley the mark of a true great. Cometh the hour cometh the man. He had cramp as well at the time. Reo-Coker was excellent as was Benyaoun.

I'm not slagging him - in fact I stated that I didn't watch the game. I just thought it was funny that I saw the penalty shoot out live and the $ky studio were giving it loads about how he had ruled the show. I read the match reports the next morning where he was praised for dominating the game and then when I watched the highlights I heard the same $ky commenators saying he'd been very ineffective so far.

I think a bit of credit for him would not go astray. I have been a critic of his in the past for holding the club to ransom. But he was the main instigagator of our comeback in Istanbul and scored that goal which was, in a word, remarkable.

How can you make that judgement in six months - less even?

I would agree that he didn't dominate the game but flashes of his brilliance were all that was required.
Henry does it regularly. You don't see him and then bam out of nowhere. Landsdowne Road anyone?
Granted Henry is a striker and you'd expect more than a flash or two from a central midfielder. But Gerrard rarely plays a conventional midfield role i.e. as part of a two, and when he does he adapts his game and stamps his authority on the game. Better player than Lampard is or ever will be. Better player than Scholes ever was.
