I don't agree with you here Bandage. The 2004 Munster final was an absolute classic, one the finest games of hurling I've ever seen. The KK Wexford game from the same year while also a fine game was not up to the same quality. Would people still be talking about this game only for Wexfords last minute goal? I don't think so. The drawn game against Cork in the All Ireland semi of 2003 (I think) was probably a better standard of game than the Wexford KK game which I have referred to.

I also don't agree with you on the result either. Think KK will win with a bit to spare.

I would say Wexford-Cork 2003 was far better than either of the two games and a good bit better than Galway-Kilkenny last year too. If only the last goal with the last puck of the game had been for the win rather than the draw..................

I do find it strange that you disparage Munster hurling/mindset for its "heart & soul, life & death, blood & thunder" etc etc. Then at the end you call for the "Spirit of 1798, Vinegar hill" etc etc. Are they not essentially the same?

There might be an undercurrent of that alright. Surprised myself there by admitting it. I think I do have somewhat of a point though in that if there are 2 games of similar quality between 2 Leinster teams and 2 Munster teams then the former won't be lauded as much simply because it doesn't have the hype and tradition of a Munster game. The 2004 final that tommymoore cites as a classic was very good but not a classic imo. Cork playing with the wind and against 14 men threw the game away by launching deliveries wide from long range. Waterford eventually won thanks to a 35 yard Paul Flynn free that floated into the net. On the other hand Wexford and Kilkenny both played to an exceptional standard throughout and you couldn't say one team threw it away like Cork.

The ending will never be forgotten - it had nearly all the elements that make hurling such a classic game. Quigley's hook on Peter Barry forcing the sideline ball when a clearance, hell any type of clearance would have won Kilkenny the game. One of Adrian Fenlon's famed line balls (*ah fook it's dropping short - we're going to lose heartbreakingly yet again*). Barry catches under the cross bar, moves to the side but is tracked by Mick Jacob who quite incredibly blocks, gathers, turns and strikes in a nano second. Brian Cody behind the goal collapses to the ground, banging the turf as the net shakes and chaos erupts around the ground. Barry breaks down in tears on the edge of the square. We go absolutely mental and by the time I get back to my seat having run up and down the steps of the stand a few times and dived into a few sections of the crowd (the poor unfortunates), the game was over. Fooking incredible feeling. But the conclusion wasn't out of place with what went before it.

Lost my train of thought here but fook it - what a day. Anyway my point was we'll have to use these memories to inspire us because man for man they're probably better but if we stand up to them we have a chance. I want every Wexford player to be able to go to bed on Sunday night debating a question that I ask myself every day, 'Would Liam Dunne have been proud of me today?' If the answer is 'yes' then I'll be satisfied whether we win or lose.

Sound of you to admit that (just dont become a Stephen Jones type journalist or we'll be arguing over more than H&A) , it is more prevalent (Munster Slating) these days (I work in Dublin so see a bit of it), I just try and slag back with some Leinster stereotypes tho.

But back to my original question, do you think the Munster 'passion' (blood & thunder) is the same as Wexford rebels of Vinegar hill type 'passion'?

No, because invoking the spirit of the Wexford rebels calls on an actual uprising and battle where we literally gave our lives for the cause. There is no parallel between this and say the Clare breakthrough in 1995 but Munster hurling types will have you believe their passion was unsurpassed. My initial point was that they'll excuse a poor or poorish game by harking back to the past and going overboard on the tradition and prestige of the Munster championship. Last Sunday was an okay game - no more and no less yet the media are clinging on to this notion that it was a classic because it involved Cork and Tipp and was played before a full house in Thurles.

Fair enough.

The media are definitely to blame for the over-hyping. A winning Cork manager isn't going to say in a post-match interview that 'the passion was lacking in both sides'. Pete Finnerty wouldn't know jack shit about munster hurling passion and sure Ger Loughnane gets excited about everything.

Getting back to a previous debate we had when RTE showed Cork/Limerick in football live instead of Wex/Offaly in hurling; would neutrals prefer to watch Wex/Off in football this Sunday prior to the Leinster hurling final as RTE are or the hurling qualifier game in Waterford between the hosts and Galway that's taking place at 2 also.

Waterford v Galway for me.

I think this one is more complicated as Wex/Off in hurling was a provincial championship game. Both Galway and Waterford are going to qualify for the quarters with Laois and W'meath in their group but I suppose it will be competitive as both will want to finish top of their group to avoid Cork and Wexford in the last 8.

delighted jacob was dropped, it might give him a much needed kick up his fat hole - trying to live off that goal in '04 for the rest of his career.

not sure i agree with bringing Red back into defence. I think his best role his half forward where he can come back into defence, break up attacks and carry the ball upfield. This also creates a lot of space for the rest of the forwards.

I’m fairly happy with the football team to be honest. We were opened up a little bit the last day and I think Red moving back will be beneficial. He’s just a supremely gifted sportsman so I’m confident his athleticism, support play and ball carrying will launch a lot of attacks while equally he’s a smashing tackler and reader of the game so he’ll be able to break up a lot of their attacks also.

Have started to get nervous about this one now. Need another phenomenal game from Rory Stafford in midfield and I’d like to see Forde play at #11 again. The GAA show on Setanta last night speculated he might play there having spent some time there against Meath – he played the whole fooking game there! Also, Paul Earley said he scored 3 points from play with his left foot and it then proceeded to show all 5 of the left foot beauties. Speculation that Karol Slattery, their attacking wing back and captain, will pick up Forde but I wouldn’t mind that. He’s a good gootballer, fast and determined but he’s not a man marker and they’ll be taking away one of their best attacking options to try and stifle Forde. Mattie’s well able for him anyway but needs to repeat the form and workrate of the last day. Anyway, don’t think our forwards will necessarily be weakened by Red going back because as you say he does a lot of his work from deep. We have a lot of options from the bench now too up front with John Hudson and Eric Bradley able to come in. Just need all of them to step up and take the pressure off Forde again like the last day.

Really it’s far and away the strongest Wexford football squad I’ve ever seen but they’ll fancy their chances too. Fook – I’d love a crack at Dublin but this is going to be tense on Sunday.

As for the hurlers I speculated in my preview that Mossy Mahon would be left out. Stamp is named at #11 but either him or Quigley could play there. I know Mick Jacob has failed to deliver much on the 2004 goal but having watched the semi in full again on Setanta I was surprised to note that he got on the ball a lot that day. Okay he didn’t use it wisely at times but he can consider himself unlucky to miss out.

Massive occasion for young Kenny – he’s more used to the half back line so not sure if he’ll play at midfield. PJ Nolan is likely to be marked by Tommy Walsh for his full championship debut – quite a baptism of fire for the young lad.

The way I look at it is hopefully the footballers will have won in advance of the hurling game. Then maybe the hurlers will repsond in kind and get some uplift from that. As Griffin said last night they will have to leave everything they have out there and cover every blade of grass. It is achievable though.

I admire your optimism bandage I really do. Fancy Wexford to win the football but don't give them a chance in the hurling. Would love to ye win but if KK play to half of what they are capable of yer fooked. Simple as that.

Was going to say it's been a while since we've heard from you curly. but I suppose since kilkenny are scheidt at every other sport, we couldn't expect to hear from their supporters till the hurling final.
