Was playing soccerball last night so I didn't see the game. Heard we were pretty bad - stale and shapeless? Positive reports on McGeady's performance from Eoin Hand, Gabriel Egan and Ken Earley (shock!), negatives from Ger Gilroy (who said he was too slow).
What was the formation first half?

I think it's about time Lee Trundle got the call up. Better than those mugs that made a show of themselves last night

Again please desist from bringing Ger Gilroy into any serious football debate. It was 3-5-2 for the first 20 odd minutes. Then he switched back to 4-4-2. Steven Reid played on the right which I was really disappointed with - I wanted to see him in the centre. There wasnt much to report from the game. McGeady showed for the ball and was lively - deserves his place for me. It looked like an end of season game. Kilbane or Duff were our best players, O'Shea was the worst. I dont think Staunton knows what his team for Germany is going to be, which is something that he should know by now

We've always had plenty of wingers and full backs so we should be trying to play a wide game.

Positive reports on McGeady's performance from Eoin Hand, Gabriel Egan and Ken Earley (shock!), negatives from Ger Gilroy (who said he was too slow). What was the formation first half? It was 3-4-3 like this: Given Kelly Breen Dunne Reid Miller O'Shea Kilbane Keane Doyle Duff Coming under a little pressure so have to be brief. They looked all at sea with the formation. When you're struggling for CBs it's probably not a good idea to add in a third. Kelly is obviously more of a right back and he really toiled for the whole game. Breen played centrally which meant Dunne was dragged down the channels the whole time - I would have had them the other way around. When Breen went off injured Kilbane had to go CB - well though he did it highlighted the lack of depth in that position. Miller and O'Shea were both a disgrace. Ineffective, insipid and terrible on the ball. Reid wasn't great on the right but at least he's a bit of drive and conviction. KIlbane was our best player overall and put in another honest slog. Still we have nobody to thread the ball around in midfield. At the moment it looks like Reid and another - it's up for grabs - Kavanagh improved things but he's hardly the answer either. Up front Doyle won everything in the air and his link up play was tidy enough but was disappointed with his movement. Keane had an off night and Duff looked to be short of confidence in the first half although in fairness he had a good last 30 and took the game to them. All in all a disappointing performance but I'm happy we're trying things. After all these players can revert to 4-4-2 at the drop of a hat and we might need to adapt several times during the qualifiers - at least now we know this isn't a formation we can change to. Re McGeady: He looked sharp when he came on. He can go on either side which is good but I agree he lacks out and out pace to really skin a full back. He relies more on skill and wasn't helped by Kelly failing to offer an overlap on more than one occasion leaving him faced with two defenders. I think if he matures over the next 12-18 months then his ideal position will be behind the striker in a 4-4-1-1 or the centre of the 3 in the 4-2-3-1 we played against Sweden.

We've always had plenty of wingers and full backs so we should be trying to play a wide game. That is true. I think the players that we have more or less determine our system. He should play 4-4-2 the whole time in the friendlies to allow the players to gel. Here is my team for the Germany match Given Finnan, O'Brien, Dunne, Kilbane McGeady, O'Shea, S Reid, Duff Morrison, Keane O'Shea was a disgrace last nigth but I still think that he is better than Kavanagh. The other alternative is to push Andy Reid in there. You could do some messing in the defense i.e. play Joey O'Brien and push Finnan to the left. I think Morrison has to get the call up front. I like Doyle but he will only have played maybe two Premiership matches by then and will be inexperienced for such a bi match. Morrison has played the biggies and has never really let us down imo.

I think it's about time Lee Trundle got the call up. Better than those mugs that made a show of themselves last night I agree, even if only to put him in the shop window so a bigger club can buy him and then he gets the relevant experience.

Our performance was like an empty tin of peaches - very lacklustre.
